BSE Dragons Junior Cricket Win Sandhurst Division

On Wednesday the 16th of March 2016, Year 8 boys cricket team participated in the Sandhurst Division. The team versed Girton Grammar first then Crusoe College.

When versing Girton, Dragons Captain Darcy Radford won the toss and elected to bat. The opening pair of Connor Sheppard and Radford put on a solid partnership of 15 of three overs before Radford (8) went out. Then came in Jack Ginnivan along with Sheppard batting for the next 8 overs before falling in quick succession. Ginnivan made 30 and Sheppard made 15, before some late innings hitting from Martin (17), Purcell (13) and Yarwood (10), bringing the total to 85.

The Dragons came out firing with the ball when Vice Captain Tom Martin opened the wicket bank with the second ball of the second over, clean bowling the batsmen, backing up the great work of the maiden over of Will Purcell.

The bowling of Purcell, Ginnivan, Yarwood, and Bullock slowed the run rate right down without getting a wicket for about 6 or 7 overs, before Hall and Bullock made breakthroughs in quick succession. Then on came the offies of Hyatt,  a big over for the batsman hitting three boundaries suddenly putting Girton back in the game. They needed roughly 8 an over.  Yarwood and Ginnivan stepped up to the challenge, but some brilliant death bowling from Martin halted the attack keeping them to only 2 runs. In the next over Purcell got hit for three successive sixes, life was breathed into Girton and they had a sense of confidence heading into the last over of Martin needing 14 runs to win. Martin stepped up and held them to 6 runs and taking a wicket. The dragons had won.

The next match against Crusoe College, Radford lost the toss and the Dragons bowled first. It was an Ideal start for BSE with Purcell making a breakthrough with the very first ball.  With a catch for Yarwood the Dragons were up and running. For the rest of the bowling inning the bowling of Purcell, Martin, Bullock, Ginnivan, and Sheppard, kept the run rate down, and the wickets tumbled. Martin, Purcell, and Sheppard picked up the spoils with 2 wickets, 3 wickets, and 3 wickets respectively. With Ginnivan picking up a runout. The dragons had kept Crusoe to a pretty low total of 59 runs.

With the Dragons going into bat needing 60 runs to win, Radford and Sheppard put on a solid opening partnership of 20 odd runs in 5 overs. Then Shappard fell for 8 and in came Ginnivan, He departed soon after bringing in Purcell. Purcell and Radford who put on a quick and fiery partnership worth about 20, before Radford departed for 18. Then Purcell and Martin again provided late innings fireworks getting the dragons over the line before Purcell fell for 17. Bringing in Matt Floyd with one run needed and he didn’t disappoint hitting the winning runs two balls later.

A great effort by all the team who displayed great sportmanship and teamwork work.
