BSE Dragons Tennis Squad Compete In Sandhurst Division
On the 3rd of March, the intermediate boys and girls tennis teams arrived, determined to win the Molly Sandner Cup (girls) and the Kell Pell Cup (boys). We prepared for the day ahead and were ready to face our first opponent, Eaglehawk. The girls flew through Eaglehawk beating them 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3. The boys also won 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2. Both teams were aware their next opponent was going to be a lot stronger, as it was Girton. The boys won two sets (6-5, 6-0) and lost only one (4-6). The girls, unfortunately, lost all of their sets despite long rallies and deuces in all of their sets (0-6, 5-6, 2-6).
After refuelling, we took on Weeroona where the girls won- 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 and boys won- 6-2, 6-0, 6-0. Then the girls played East Loddon (6-1, 1-6, 1-6) and the boys played Castlemaine (won-6-0, 6-0, 6-3). The boys number two pairing were playing unbelievable, as they’d won their 4 matches 6-0!
Breaking the day in half, we were provided a delicious lunch. After a short break, we had to face CCB, an opponent we knew was going to be hard to defeat. The girls number 1 pairing lost 5-6, coming back from 3-0 down. The number 2 pairing lost 6-3 and number 3 had a draw at 5-5. Overall, the girls all had reasonably close matches against Catholic College. The boys also had very close matches, a 6-4, 5-6 and 3-6!
After being undefeated all day, the number 2 boys pairing had a nail biting finish. The score was 5-5 deuce-sudden death, little did these boys know that this point was the decider between 1st and 2nd place for the Kel Pell Cup!!
Unfortunately, the boys lost. But all doubles pairings played well and a great effort done by all! Our last two matches were against Crusoe (girls- 5-2, 6-1, 4-3, boys- 4-5, 6-0, 6-2) and Marist (girls- 2-6, 1-6, 6-1, boys- 6-2, 6-0, 6-1).
Both teams both had their wins and losses; we had our good and bad shots. Coming from this experience, I believe every player in each of the BSE would’ve learned something. Whether it was court positioning, game preparation, a percentage of first serves or a tweak in technique.
Good luck next year! I know everyone will have a lot of fun and continue to improve.
