BSE Cyclist's give their best

Victorian School Cycling Championships

On Saturday, October 10 & Sunday, October 11 Bendigo played host to the Victorian School Cycling Championships.

Saturday saw the Mountain Bike events conducted at Spring Gully. We had a large contingent of novice and licenced riders.

Novice riders are riders who have not competed in any official mountain bike events previously. Licenced riders hold a current racing licence sanctioned by Cycling Australia.

All our novice competitors did very well with many being on a mountain bike for the first time. We just missed the placings but the enjoyment factor was very high and we have potentially found some regular mountain bike competitors.

Licenced riders Isaac Buckell & Sam Buckell were somewhat favourites for their events and certainly did not disappoint.
Sam was at the head of the race in the final lap and had some unfortunate luck, puncturing late in the lap. To Sam’s credit, he kept pushing along with the flat tyre and was amazingly still able to hold on for third place. He then impressed further with his cool attitude and dealt with the disappointment with maturity beyond his years.

Isaac was all class in his age group. He lead from the gun and increased his lead each lap. Not only did he win the State title but he outclassed last years National Champion in the process.
He left it all out on the track and the heat took its toll. Only class athletes can push themselves that far and Isaac’s performance certainly was  one that impressed.

Sunday our BSE cyclist had a great opportunity to race on a closed circuit in the town centre.
Again we were well represented by novice and licenced riders.

Our Novice riders were prominent throughout the day but again missed the placings. Some particular performances of note were our U15 Boys who seemed to be in control all race but unfortunately, couldn’t finish it off. Jacob Buckell who fell mid race showed plenty of grit and remounted to join the race even though he had lost skin.
Jordan Buckell displayed plenty of guts with his chasing and determination in the U17.

The BSE girls in the U15 section also were great, working together and just missing the placings.
Our licenced riders were up against quality fields and were impressive in their conduct.

Sam Buckell back after his disappointment from the mountain bike, fronted with added determination. He took control of the race early and with all competitors watching him he was still able to assert his presence and stomp home for a great sprint win - State Champion.

Connor White was right up there in the U17 flashing home on the outside for 5th.

It was a great weekend and the students conducted themselves extremely well. They supported each other and were great representatives of BSE.

Well done to all. Looking forward to expanding our involvement next year.
